Gill Rosenberg from Kurdistan: I'm totally safe and secure.
Syrian Kurdistan,— A post on the Facebook page of Gill Rosenberg suggests the reports the Canadian-Israeli was kidnapped in Syria were false.
"I'm totally safe and secure," the post reads.
It explains she doesn't have much access to the Internet, and so "can't reply regularly and only happened to have a chance to log in and see these bulls--- news stories. Ignore the reports I've been captured."
On Sunday, the Jerusalem Post and ynetnews.com, the English-language version of Israel's largest and most popular news website, both reported separately that Rosenberg, 31, who joined Kurdish YPJ fighters in Syrian Kurdistan last month, had been captured by the Islamic State.
On Sunday afternoon, SITE Intel, which monitors jihadist and white supremacist activity, said: "(ISIS) captured a Jewish female soldier fighting alongside the Kurdish Peshmerga in Kobani (Syria), and discussed ideas for executing her or using her for prisoner exchanges."
Those close to her in Syria refuted the claims earlier Monday on Rosenberg's Facebook page, apparently in an effort to reassure her family and friends.
Oliver Brimo, whose Facebook profile claims he's from Syria and includes a banner saying "Save Kobane" (where much of the fighting is concentrated), posted: "To those who are concernedwww.Ekurd.net about Gill Rosenberg's safety. Gill is safe and she is not active on Facebook because she has no Internet access. Once she has Internet access she will be updating her status.
"ISIS's supporters launched a rumour on social media that she was captured in #Kobani which is not true, simply because Gill is at least 300 km from Kobani."
Two others posted a link on Rosenberg's Facebook page to the "personal website of Mutlu Civiroglu."
Civiroglu's website and twitter account both identify him as a Syrian and Kurdish affairs analyst based in Washington.
On his website Monday, Civiroglu said: "Yesterday some reports spread quickly that Gill Rosenberg ... was kidnapped by ISIS. However, Kurdish sources strongly deny such allegations and call it ISIS propaganda."
Civiroglu's website also claimed that in a phone interview, "Kobani Defence Chief Ismat Hasan said Rosenberg has never been in Kobani" and that "another Kurdish official...said Gill Rosenberg is safe and she met her personally yesterday."
In an e-mail to QMI Agency Monday, a spokesman for Canada's foreign affairs department said the government "is aware of reports that a Canadian citizen was kidnapped in Syria. Canada is pursuing all appropriate channels to seek further information" but would not elaborate, concerned specifics "may compromise ongoing efforts and risk endangering the safety of Canadian citizens abroad."
Rosenberg reportedly immigrated to Israel from Canada in 2006, after studying at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and left behind a promising career as a pilot.
