Iran: Young man whipped 80 whiskers publicly for alcohol consumption

The Iranian regime executed a death penalty publicly in the city of Kashmar in Razavi Khorasan province on July 10, Amnesty reports on Wednesday on its website.





The victim, a young man identified only through his initials M R, was punished with 80 whiskers. He had been convicted of alcohol punishment for consuming alcohol 10 years ago when he was 14 or 15 years old, Amnesty writes on his website.

This "highlights the inhumanity of a legal system that legalizes brutality," Amnesty added in its press release.

The local media of the regime published the image to the right showing the young man tied to a tree while a masked man whipped him while a group of people looked at distances.

"The circumstances in this case are quite shocking, which is another scary example of the Iranian authorities' skewed priorities. No one, regardless of age, should be subjected to punishment; that a child was charged with drinking alcohol and sentenced to 80 whiskers is incomprehensible, "said Philip Luther, director of Amnesty's Middle East and North Africa research.

"The frequent use of body punishment, including against children, by Iranian authorities shows a shocking disrespect for basic human rights. They should immediately abolish all forms of such punishment, which in Iran includes amputation and deprivation of sight, and punishment, "he added.
