"Murad was born in Kocho in Sinjar, northern Iraq. Her family, Yazidian Kurds, was farmers and she grew up in a farm. In August 2014, her hometown was surrounded by Islamic State (IS) warriors who killed 600 people - including six by Murad's brothers and stepbrothers-and took younger women as slaves. She was slave in the city of Mosul, was beaten, burned with cigarettes and raped when she tried to escape. In November 2014, she managed to escape after her "owner" left the house unlocked.
