The Italian police discovered 270 kg of heroin hidden in a container that arrived on board a ship from Iran, reports Reuters. This is, according to police, the biggest seizure of heroin in Italy over the last 20 years.

The cargo had been transported from the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas and transported via Hamburg, Germany, and Valencia, Spain, before reaching the Italian port of Genoa on October 17, Italian police said in a press conference on Friday.

The police allowed a small part of the illegal cargo to continue its planned journey by truck to the Netherlands.

When the vehicle entered a warehouse on November 2, the Italian and Dutch police went to the room. Two men of Turkish origin were arrested in connection with the seizure. According to information, the truck driver did not know that heroin was in its rig, police said.
