Congratulations Sweden on the National Day
Sweden is a fantastic country we should all take responsibility for society and security.
Today it is Sweden's national day and therefore we say great congratulations to ourselves. It will be a great start in the summer and a nice chance to gather and celebrate a nice day together.
But what are we really celebrating?
Everyone knows that June 6 is our national day, but maybe not as many know why. We make it in memory of the day when Gustav Vasa was elected king on June 6, 1523. But also to remember the 1809 government form. From the beginning you celebrated the Swedish flag's day, and then changed its name to the national day. In 2005 many cheered for then this day finally became a holiday and red in the calendar. For sure, you should be free on such a nice day, regardless of whether you would like to travel away or intend to participate in the celebration at home.
So the Swedes celebrate the national day
Around the country you often celebrate outdoors with the flag in top and activities for big and small. There are tip walks, free activities, boat trips, picnic blankets, song and dance shows and talk of local profiles. The cafés serve delicious flag-baked pastries. In addition, many municipalities hold welcome ceremonies for new Swedes. In the big cities, the celebrations take place in several places, but we have chosen to highlight the largest ones.
In Stockholm, the really big celebration takes place at Skansen on Djurgården with flag workshop, face painting and other nice activities for families with children. In the evening, the royal family is guests of honor when the large television broadcast on the Solliden scene takes place together with several popular artists. The Royal Palace is traditionally open to the public with free admission between 10 and 17 and this year it is Prince Carl Philip who opens the gates. In Stockholm City Hall, all new Swedes are welcomed with a pleasant citizens' ceremony.
In Gothenburg you are waving the flags as the most in Slottsskogen where Gothenburg's Symphony Orchestra plays on the big lawn in front of Björngårdsvillan. For the children there will be face painting and other fun activities. Our new Swedes are celebrated with a traditional citizenship ceremony at Stora Dammen. At Skansen Kronan, the flag is raised to a fun-loving choir. If you are looking for a picnic, you can join the Picnic Festival at Apslätten, which is a free festival where several artists perform.
The official celebration in Malmö takes place at Stortorget with flag ceremony, speech and a large scene with several artists and the Fire Department orchestra. In Folkets Park there are nice activities for families with children. At Malmö Opera all new Swedes are welcomed with a ceremony.
How do you celebrate the Swedish National Day? Feel free to share your experiences!
