#Religious #Misogyny in #Javanrud, #Iran A Man Throws Acid on His Wife in Javanrud
According to reports received; In the past few days in Javanrud County, a 25-year-old woman identified as "Mehri" son of Ahmad, from the village of "Yari", was attacked with acid by her husband, identified as "Yavar Salehi", son of Iskander, from the village of "Lorabi". The attack took place after a family argument and in front of their 8-year-old child.
At around 8 am, the accused took his wife and child outside the city limits and threw acid on his wife's face, neck, head and hands.
As a result of this act, the young woman suffered severe burns and blindness in one eye and is currently hospitalized in Golestan Hospital in Kermanshah and is in critical condition.
Despite the fact that more than 10 days have passed since the incident, and the victim’s family has filed an official complaint, no effective judicial or law enforcement action has been taken to arrest or interrogate the accused, and the attacker continues to roam freely in the city.
This blatant violation of the principle of judicial impartiality and independence, coupled with the lack of effective protection for victims of violence, demonstrates a deep gap in the criminal accountability system of the Islamic Republic of Iran in dealing with violence against women.
Acid attacks are considered a form of torture, inhuman and degrading treatment that is carried out with the intention of physically and mentally harming the victim. The government’s failure to prevent, prosecute and punish such acts is a violation of the government’s obligations to guarantee the human rights of women and children.
Furthermore, being a young child at the scene of violence will have severe psychological consequences for them, which is itself a violation of the rights of the child under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
