The imam in Kristianstad who preached on how men should beat their wives must now leave, writes Expressen.

"The board has now decided to end his voluntary service as a prayer leader," the congregation wrote on Tuesday in a press release.

- We strongly distance ourselves from this. A lot of our congregation members reacted to this immediately, says Shaaban Abou Zur, who is the regular imam and chairman of the Islamic congregation in Kristianstad, to SVT Skåne.

He adds:

- We have paused his participation. We must do this to ensure that he is going in our direction.

Preached about "disobedient women"

Expressen has previously reported on the imam's sermon in a mosque in Kristianstad this summer. The topic of the sermon was “disobedient women” and was about what the women’s husbands have the right to do to reprimand them.

– Admonish them, avoid them in bed and beat them, the imam is said to have said.

The imam says that his words were taken out of context and that he felt time pressure during the sermon.

– I have my eyes on the clock, so sometimes I lose focus, the imam said about the incident afterwards.

The congregation: Dissociates itself from violence against women

The congregation writes in a press release that it dissociates itself from all forms of violence and abuse against women. Furthermore, the congregation writes that it dissociated itself from the sermon “from the very first day”.

The municipality: Positive about ending the collaboration

– We view positively that the congregation has ended its collaboration with the imam. It is important that we stand together for everyone’s right to a life free from all types of violence, says Richard Berggren (M), chairman of the labor and welfare committee in Kristianstad municipality.
