Today is the 96th week of the “#No_to_Execution Tuesdays” campaign. This Tuesday, prisoners in 55 prisons across Iran went on a mass hunger strike to protest the widespread wave of executions and demand the abolition of the death penalty.
A woman named Qamari Abbaszadeh, 29, was executed in Sari prison on charges of murder. Qamari Abbaszadeh is the 40th woman whose execution has been recorded and confirmed by the Iranian Human Rights Organization.
This is the highest annual number of executions of women in more than two decades.
Of the 40 women, 13 were sentenced to self-retribution on charges of “drugs” and 27 on charges of “murder”.
Of the 27 executed on charges of murder, 17 had killed their spouses, at least one of whom was a child bride. Only two of these executions (five percent) were officially announced.
