Generalized hijab; from political deadlock to erosion of internal government ranks and Khamenei’s failure
Khamenei’s recent order to intensify the fight against “hijab” is not from a position of power, but rather reflects a deep political crisis within the government. From the very beginning, the issue of hijab has not been a religious law, but rather the main sticking point for the political survival of the Islamic Republic, and this sticking point became its breaking point. The daily, widespread and widespread resistance of women over the past four decades has practically collapsed one of the main ideological and security pillars of the regime.
The Islamic Republic is fundamentally built on gender apartheid and control over women’s bodies and lives, and compulsory hijab has always been a fundamental mechanism of repression and a tool for exercising power. However, with the beginning of the Women’s Revolution of Freedom after the government murder of Jinamesha Amini by the Ershad patrol, this tool has become obsolete; Women who have been the targets of organized repression for decades have discredited the regime’s imposed order from within by trampling on, burning, and publicly and collectively abandoning the compulsory hijab. This is a direct political challenge to the logic and pillars of governance, which, in the regime’s own words, has removed the first embankment from its hands.
The regime’s real fear is that this disobedience and widespread protest will spread to other areas of power. The regime knows that if it cannot dominate women’s bodies, its legitimacy and ability to exercise power in other areas will also collapse. For this reason, despite critical conditions, including the potential risk of war, the energy crisis, and the dire livelihood situation, the re-suppression of women has become an urgent priority; an attempt to rebuild the authority lost through naked violence with the compulsory hijab.
A deep rift has also emerged within the regime. The confrontation between the part of the regime that wants a return to widespread repression and the complete policing of society and the part of the power structure that believes in cultural work has intensified. However, the section that believes in coercive measures has managed to force Khamenei to issue a new decree; a decision that is more than a sign of authority, it is a document of the regime's desperation towards society and women in the forefront.
These policies may be able to temporarily generate concern, but the history of the Islamic Republic's performance has repeatedly shown that women do not stand idly by in the face of the regime. Iranian society has experienced the experience of going through terror and it is not possible to return to the previous situation and the free life before the women's revolution.
