The Kurdish self-administration and Damascus have agreed to a withdrawal of all armed forces from the front lines and a gradual process for integrating Rojava's existing civilian and military structures into the newly established Syrian state structures.
Three SDF brigades are to be retained and transferred to a future, new division, while a brigade from Kobanê is to be subordinated to an existing division in Aleppo. Furthermore, the agreement contains important commitments regarding the legal and educational equality of Kurds in #Syria. #Rojava
For the people on the ground, this hopefully means an end to the bloodshed and the siege, and the return of the 350,000 internally displaced persons who were displaced as a result of the fighting in recent weeks!
However, nothing yet guarantees that the so-called "interim government" will adhere to these agreements. The current agreement amounts to little more than a dictated peace, as it was reached under massive military and political pressure. What truly matters is what happens on the ground, in the cities and villages of northeastern Syria itself. For example, security forces of the interim government are soon to be stationed in Qamishli and Hasakah. Given the ethnically and Islamist-motivated war crimes against Kurds, Alawites, and Druze committed by the troops of the "interim government," crimes accompanied by rhetoric of extermination, this is rightly causing great anxiety among the local Kurdish population.
Our work does not end here! The international community must continue to monitor northeastern Syria and ensure that the ceasefire is upheld and civilians are protected! Just because self-proclaimed leaders speak of unity does not mean they are pursuing a path that promises unity in diversity.
