Widespread protests in France, the violent police crackdown on demonstrators, and the use of harmful tear gas against them constitute a violation of democratic principles. France must engage in dialogue with the protesters as soon as possible to address the issues.
In the French school protests, staff have been targeted as well as buildings. On 1 October attackers at Victor Hugo high school in Marseille doused the headteacher in petrol; the prosecutor’s office said he was injured. The same morning, pupils surrounded a fire engine at Saint-Exupéry high school, forced the crew off it and set the vehicle alight. Education Minister Edouard Geffray said 119 students and staff had been hurt since the blockades began, most of them principals and teachers. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez called it an escalation, not a normal protest.

The demonstrations, which started in the French capital, have spread across the country, with students protesting over a lack of teachers, overcrowded classrooms and run-down buildings.
