China has expressed concern over the United States' seizure of an Iranian-flagged cargo ship.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiaqun said on Monday that Beijing was concerned about Washington's seizure of the Iranian ship and urged all parties to responsibly abide by the ceasefire agreement.
Jiaqun said, "The situation in the Strait of Hormuz is complex and sensitive," and stressed that the parties should refrain from further escalating tensions and create the necessary conditions for the resumption of normal ship passage through the strait.
He also called on the conflicting parties to "continue the ceasefire and negotiations," adding, "Now that there is an opportunity for peace, favorable conditions must be created to end the war as soon as possible."
The comments came after the United States announced that it had seized an Iranian cargo ship that had attempted to break through the naval blockade of Iranian ports.
Seizure of the ship "Tusca"
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the destroyer "USS Spruance" intercepted the ship "Tusca" as it headed towards an Iranian port in violation of the naval blockade.A video released by the US Central Command showed what it said were Marines seizing the Iranian-flagged cargo ship M/V Touska.
It said the ship tried to run its blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran has vowed to retaliate.
It comes as concerns grew that the ceasefire between the US and Iran may not hold, and talks between the two sides in Pakistan are now in jeopardy as Iran said it is rejecting the discussions.
The US military said it had also fired on an Iranian-flagged cargo ship as it headed towards a port on Sunday, disabling its engines.
