3. Kurdish Fighters Received No Weapons, Aid or Support: Just US Airstrikes
Will Syrian Kurdistan's Kobani fall to IS? 5 fast facts you need to know.
This is a developing story. Well placed bloggers inside Syria and in contact directly with YPG and Kurdish commanders on the ground are reporting that ISIS has taken the HQ of the Kurdish fighters defending Kobani, a significant blow to their valiant efforts to save the city from falling into the ISIS caliphate. Updates made throughout October 10th have tracked the continuing situation in Kobani, which is fluid, with Kurds and ISIS fighting street by street, and reinforcements coming to both sides – more ISIS fighters from Raqqa and Free Syrian Army fighters through Turkey to support the YPG or Kurdish fighters. As the battle rages on Turkey shows its’ true colors more and more, proving itself to be a fair weather friend to United States interests at best – but more likely Turkey is siding with ISIS in a long-term strategy to wipe out the Kurds of Syria, significantly reducing the hand of Turkish Kurds, including the KPP with whom it has been negotiating a peace settlement.
The good cop-bad cop routine of President Obama and Vice-President Biden failed to move the Turks; and in an act that can only be considered in direct contravention of Kurd and coalition interests, Turkey released Abu Hanzala, the so-called spiritual leader of ISIS.1. Kurd Headquarters in Kobani Have Fallen to ISIS
@jenanmouussa reports that via phone conversation with local #kobane Kurdish chief Anwar Moselm, the headquarters of the YPG in Kobani have fallen into the hands of ISIS. ISIS and the YPG have been fighting at close quarters inside for Kobani for days, as US airpower has pounded ISIS positions been has been unable to stop the advance of ISIS as it enters the city streets. YPG are out-manned and outgunned, as Turkish tanks sit idly by watching the advance of ISIS on their longtime cultural enemies, the Kurds.2. 40% of Kobani Is in the Hands of ISIS
Reliable sources in Kobani report that nearly half the city is in the hands of ISIS.3. Kurdish Fighters Received No Weapons, Aid or Support: Just US Airstrikes.
While Kazakhstan and other countries have committed weapons, food and aid to the Kurds, none of it has reached Kobani. Some suggest this is in large part due to the Turkish blockade of Kobani. The United Nations has just called on Turkey to allow the flow of ” volunteers and their equipment into the city” to help with self-defense. This is the closest the UN has come to endorsing the use of force against ISIS in Kobani. In the United States, commentators and politicians alike are questioning the air strike strategy – indicating it is largely impotent in doing anymore than slowing down the inevitable advance of ISIS without well prepared ground troops.4. Turkey Will Not Enter Kobani Until ISIS has Cleared the City of Kurds
It is fact that Iran has leaned heavily on Turkey to stay out of Kobani while the US has leaned heavily on Turkey to enter Kobani. In this case the influence of Iran seems to be superior, as Turkey’s disdain for the Kurdswww.Ekurd.net and Bashar al-assaad outweighs their fear of ISIS. The opinion of this writer is that analysis by Luqman Barwari and Barry A. Fisher in today’s Wall Street Journal is the correct one: Kobani is the Warsaw Uprising for the Kurds.5. ISIS Reported to Have 4000 Troops In and Around Kobani
Reports from inside Kobani saying that ISIS reinforcements are on the way, and that the road from Raqqa is wide open. The Kurds need reinforcements, weapons, food and aid.
6. ISIS 5 Year Plan Shows Why Kobani Important
This map released by ISIS shows their five year plan to spread the ISIL caliphate from north Africa to South-East Asia. If Kobani falls, al-Qaeda is successful in destabilizing Yemen, and the Muslim brotherhood is able to agitate in Egypt these large pockets of ISIS control may be strong enough to encourage Jihadist elements in Saudi Arabia and other Western aligned Gulf States to rise up as well. OPINION: If ISIS is able to open up multiple fronts in its’ effort to create a caliphate across this enormous land mass, and do it with local forces using urban areas and homegrown weapons to attack, it will be very hard for the US and its allies to use air-power to combat the rise of fundamentalist power. At that point boots will be on the ground globally and we may face another more insidious front inside western democracies.7. Kurds and Syrian Freedom Fighters Have Joined to Fight ISIS Together
In a significant turnaround, the YPG and FSA, or Free Syrian Army, have joined forces in Kobani to fight ISIS. As this interview with Abu Saif, the field commander of Raqqa’s Revolutionaries Brigades, stationed in Kobani by Michael Weiss of now.mmedia.me shows, the enemy-of-my-enemy strategy is alive and well in the swirling politics and changing allegiances in the fight with ISIS.Turkey Released ISIS Spiritual Leader Abu Hanzala from Jail on October 10th
