On August 28, the website of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner wrote in an article about the internet shutdown by governments: Activists say that shutting down the internet violates human rights.


Many of these interruptions are done during protests and political tensions, including elections. According to the #KeepItOn coalition, which monitors internet blackouts around the world, while blackouts during elections are "a disaster for democracy," government officials continue to impose them before, during or immediately after the vote.


In 2021, this coalition recorded 7 election-related internet outages in 6 countries: Chad, Republic of Congo, Iran, Niger, Uganda and Zambia.
