Exclusive Talk about Fatemeh Muthanna’s Condition in Prison.

n October 28, 2020, Fatemeh Muthanna’s condition in prison was deteriorating and in severe. The political prisoner was transferred to Taleghani Hospital in Tehran and returned to prison despite the disagreement of a specialist doctor and his opinion that the sick prisoner should be hospitalized. Mrs. Muthanna had previously been anesthetized once in prison and taken to hospital. So, this was the second time.

The Human Rights Center of No to prison, no to execution interviewed a relative of Fatemeh Muthanna, about her illness and condition in prison. In this interview we asked her relative to provide us as much as information possible about Fatemeh Muthanna’s condition in prison so we can inform our fellow citizens.

We would like to draw your attention to parts of this interview:

Fatemeh Muthanna’s condition in prison is not well now. She was taken to a hospital and sent back to prison. These conditions do not help her recover. Since October of this year, Fatemeh has been in prison for 6 years. She was sentenced to 16 years in prison and still has 9 years left. In prison, she has contracted gastrointestinal disease (intestinal fever) and is suffering from liver problems and intestinal colitis.

Fatemeh was anesthetized in prison early September this year and was taken to the hospital. She was hospitalized for 3-4 days and was a little better. Then she was returned to prison. But according to the doctor, she should not be in a state of stress and nervous tension. As soon as the nervousness and stress begin, her condition will become worse again.  

The medication prescribed for her has no effect on stress. On October 28, she became ill again. When she was taken to the hospital, the doctor advised that due to the acute condition of the intestinal disease, the current treatment had no effect, and she should start corticosteroid therapy. This treatment is not possible in prison. Because she should be under the supervision of a doctor in the hospital and have good rest. Fatemeh’s physical condition is serious, however, she was sent back to prison. The doctor says that this treatment is useless. “The patient, who should not be stressed, was tied to a hospital bed!”

We asked her relative, now that Mrs. Muthanna has been returned to prison, does she have the conditions for medical treatment in prison? How is she doing at the moment?

“She is getting worse every day,” she said. She is in prison or in the medical center or under a serum. Sometimes she faints from pain. In prison, they do not provide medical care and do not allow her to stay in the hospital. In this condition, they are keeping her in prison to apply more pressure. This way the disease is destroying her body.

If prison officials wanted to help, they should have allowed her to be hospitalized and continue her treatment. The hospital has now written that even if her blood pressure drops or she feels nauseous, she should be taken to the hospital urgently. The doctor disagrees to do the operation, as they will have to remove a part of her intestine. But prison officials are not taking any steps to ease the prisoner’s pain so that she can feel a little better. On the other hand, they stress her out. Stress is like a poison to her. As soon as the stress enters, she cannot eat food or drink and becomes unconscious.

Her husband Hassan Sadeghi is in prison too. He is worried about his two children and their condition since Fatemeh is imprisoned. They have a son and a young daughter which Fatemeh’s 85-year-old mother is watching after them.

We asked the follow-ups the family did and what was the response of the officials and the judiciary?

The answer was that none of the officials and organs are accountable. Is like a triangle formed, in which one passes the family to the other. The head of the prison says that Amin Vaziri is in charge of the prisons. Amin Vaziri told the family that I have ordered her to be sent to the hospital so go and ask the head of the prison. The head of the prison passes to the assistant prosecutor. “In the end, none of them will be blamed.”

Then we asked her relative about the confiscation of the family’s house and property. She replied:

For the past six years, the judiciary has confiscated and ransacked the family’s shop and one of their houses.

Now, the intelligence officials are pointing out and trying to seize the only house left for her children and her elderly mother. Soon or later they will be left with no shelter
