Parliament passes mandate for military action

The Turkish Parliament has approved a controversial mandate to conduct military operations in Syria and Iraq, authorizing the government  to send troops abroad and allowing foreign forces to use Turkish territory for possible military operations against the ISIS.

The comprehensive mandate has recently been submitted to the Parliament by the ruling AKP government on the grounds that “risks and threats against the national security of Turkey have gained a new dimension in line with the recent developments.”

The controversial motion has been passed by 298 "yes" votes by the lawmakers of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) against 98 votes cast by the deputies of the People’s Democracy Party (HDP) and Republican People’s Party (CHP).

The mandate will begin tomorrow and last for one year.
