The Sykes-Picot agreement was a secret agreement concluded on May 16, 1916 between France and the United Kingdom, which was approved by Russia later that year. It contained a draft of a division of the Ottoman Empire into British, French, Italian and Russian spheres of interest after the First World War.
The events that preceded the agreement and the events thereafter are still very controversial today and form the background to today's situation in the Middle East
