On Tuesday morning, a first plane leaves with people who are not allowed to remain in Sweden.

There are initially 30 people who are deported by being put on a chartered plane with destination Baghdad in Iraq against their will.

Something similar has not happened since 2012.

The reason why it is happening now is because Iraq has made a complete turnaround in its attitude to receiving citizens who have been denied asylum but have not accepted voluntary deportation, Sweden's Radio Ekot learns.

The beginning of "mass deportation"

The radio channel describes this morning's chartered plan as the beginning of a "mass deportation" as the decision opens the door for even more forced deportations in the future.

The same concept has been used in the past for similar group deportations, for example in the attempt to deport roughly 40 Afghans by plane in 2020, which was stopped at the last moment.

But the current decision is also characterized by several questions, precisely because Iraq has previously refused to welcome home people who are forced to return to the country.

It is also what has made it so far impossible for Sweden to deny and deport those who do not want to go back to Iraq.

Makes demands on Sweden and Iraq

According to Ekot, talks between Sweden and Iraq have been held for a long time.

And now there is a demand that the countries explain what it is that has caused the conditions to change.

- It should be reported openly, says the lawyer Majeed Alnashi, who represents several of the deported Iraqis, to the radio.

Iraqi representatives must tell about it and say why they accept it now. But the Swedish authorities must also tell us what they have done and how they have made Iraq change its way of thinking.

Happens by force

The group in question that is expelled is thus forced to do so.

For those who instead of their own volition choose to return to Iraq, the Swedish Migration Agency has since June 2023 introduced an extended support effort of up to 5,000 euros per person.

Support is valid up to and including 31 January 2024.

- The possibility to apply for extended support also applies to those who previously had a negative attitude towards returning, but who now choose to return on their own, highlights the Swedish Migration Agency on its website.

Strained relationship

The relationship between Sweden and Iraq has been strained in recent months.

Large protests have taken place in Iraq due to the Koran burnings and in July the Swedish embassy in Baghdad was stormed - for the second time in a month.

26 Iraqi citizens have been forcibly deported from Sweden and are on their way to Baghdad, reports Ekot.

Iraq has long refused to accept people who are forcibly deported from Sweden - what has changed now is unclear.

SD highlighted its involvement, writing on X, formerly Twitter:

"Goodbye Hassan!"

Then they deleted the post.

During the morning, according to Ekot's information, a specially chartered plane took off from Sweden in the direction of Baghdad in Iraq. There must be 26 people who have previously received deportation notices on the plane - and Iraq must be prepared to receive the people.

In the past, Iraq has not wanted to receive people who do not want to return themselves. What has now changed is unclear.

The lawyer Majeed Alnashi - who represents several of the deportees - believes that a secret agreement was concluded.

- Presumably, an agreement has been concluded which is still secret, he says to Svenska Dagbladet.

The police: Dialogue longer

Neither Ekot nor Svenska Dagbladet have received any comment from the Foreign Ministry or the police about what applies.

"For a long time, the police and the Swedish Migration Agency have had an ongoing dialogue with the Iraqi embassy regarding return cases," the police write in an email to Expressen without going into details.

The police also confirm to Expressen that at the end of August, they carried out a return operation where eleven criminal exiles were received by Iraq.

Ignacio Vita tells Svenska Dagbladet that he has noticed a change in the handling of forcibly deported Iraqis.

- Iraq previously had a policy of not issuing temporary travel documents to people who do not want to return. Now there has been a change in that policy due to diplomatic relations between Sweden and Iraq, he tells the newspaper.

SD: "Goodbye Hassan!"

At the same time, the Sweden Democrats wrote on X, formerly Twitter, about the mass deportation. They wrote:

"The Sweden Democrats and the government are showing action. We maintain the regulated immigration, what was completely impossible for the left government is now possible. The difference could not be clearer. The Sweden Democrats are really making a difference and the paradigm shift is rolling on.”

Along with the post appeared a picture of an airplane, with the text:

"Goodbye Hassan!"

That post has since been deleted by SD.

“The post was posted late in the work day, when people are getting ready to go home. A post of this nature would likely require some moderation in the comments section, which is best done during business hours. That's why it was taken down," writes Oskar Cavalli-Björkman, press manager at SD, in a comment.
