The anniversary of the overthrow of Hitler's Nazi regime and the end of World War II in Europe is commemorated every year on May 8 and 9. This historic event is a turning point in modern history that led to the fall of the Third Reich and the end of Nazi atrocities.

The primary anniversary of the overthrow of the Hitler regime and the defeat of Nazi Germany is celebrated in May. As of 2026, the world is marking the 81st anniversary.
Key Commemorative Dates
May 8 (VE Day): Observed in Western Europe, the UK, and the US as Victory in Europe Day. It commemorates the Allies' formal acceptance of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender on May 8, 1945.
May 9 (Victory Day): Observed in Russia and several other post-Soviet states. This date is chosen because the instrument of surrender was signed late on May 8 in Berlin, which was already May 9 in Moscow time.
July 20 (German Resistance): Germany officially honors members of the internal resistance, such as Claus von Stauffenberg, who attempted to assassinate Hitler and overthrow the regime in the failed July 20 Plot (Operation Valkyrie) in 1944.

Historical Context of the Regime's Fall
The "overthrow" was a multi-stage process involving military defeat, internal collapse, and leadership suicide:
Hitler’s Suicide: Adolf Hitler committed suicide on April 30, 1945, as Soviet forces reached central Berlin.
Surrender: Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz, Hitler's successor, authorized the unconditional surrender of all German forces, which was ratified in Berlin on May 8, 1945.
End of the War: While the fighting in Europe ended in May, World War II did not fully conclude until Japan's surrender in August 1945.

The “anniversary of the overthrow of the Hitler regime” usually refers to the end of Nazi rule in Europe in May 1945 — commemorated in different countries as:

  • Victory in Europe Day (VE Day, 8 May)
  • Liberation Day in Denmark, marking the liberation from German occupation in 1945.

In Denmark, people traditionally place candles in windows on the evening of 4 May to remember the announcement of liberation..Jennifer L. Nature of the Relationship
  • Economic Strategy: Germany became Iran's most important trade partner by the mid-1930s. Reza Shah utilized German expertise and investment to modernize Iran's infrastructure, including the construction of factories, roads, and railroads.
  • Alternative to Colonial Powers: The Shah sought a "Third Power" to counter the long-standing influence of Great Britain and the Soviet Union in Iranian affairs. Germany, having no history of occupying Iranian territory, appeared to be an ideal partner.
  • Ideological Affinities: Reza Shah admired Hitler's strong-man leadership style and rapid industrialization of Germany. There was also a shared emphasis on "Aryan" identity; in 1935, the Shah requested that the international community use the name "Iran" (Land of the Aryans) instead of "Persia" to highlight these ancient roots.
Key Exchanges
Diplomatic Visits: High-ranking officials exchanged visits, including the head of the Hitler Youth, Baldur von Schirach, visiting Tehran in 1937.
Symbolic Gifts: During a visit to Germany, the Iranian delegation brought Hitler Persian carpets and pistachios. In return, Hitler sent the Shah a self-portrait.
Racial Laws: In a strategic move to secure support, the Nazi government exempted Iranians from the Nuremberg racial laws, classifying them as "pure Aryans".

Hajj Mohtasham al-Saltaneh Esfandiari was one of the prominent political and cultural figures of Iran during the Pahlavi era. In addition to his political activities, he also played a role in cultural and international arenas. In 1316 (around 1356 AH), Mohtasham al-Saltaneh Esfandiari traveled to this country at the invitation of Adolf Hitler, the leader of Germany, and met and negotiated with him. This meeting took place while Esfandiari, as Iran's representative, had participated in the coronation ceremony of King George VI of England.

The Fall of Reza Shah
The perceived collaboration eventually led to the Shah's downfall:
Allied Suspicions: Following the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the British and Soviets feared that German technicians in Iran were Nazi agents and that the Shah would block supply routes to the USSR.
Refusal to Expel Germans: Despite Allied ultimatums to expel German citizens, Reza Shah insisted on Iranian neutrality.
Anglo-Soviet Invasion: In August 1941, Allied forces invaded Iran to secure the "Persian Corridor". They forced Reza Shah to abdicate in favor of his son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and sent him into

He would end his life two days later on April 30.
The death of Adolf Hitler, leader of the Third Reich, occurred on the evening of April 30, 1945. He committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with cyanide. Hitler was only 56 years old at the time of his death.
Hitler married his mistress, Eva Braun, 36 hours before his death, and Eva committed suicide with him at the same time.
Eva Braun committed suicide by breaking a cyanide capsule and Hitler committed suicide by taking cyanide and shooting himself in the head with a pistol.
Hitler's death is generally not confirmed. Based on the statements of some Nazi leaders during the Nuremberg Trials, the general belief about the end of Adolf Hitler's life is that, according to Hitler's own orders, both bodies were completely burned in advance so that they would not fall into the hands of the Allied forces, nor would any trace of them remain. But no one knows for sure what happened to the Third Reich.
Other sources also state that Adolf Hitler fled from his hiding place to South America and died in 1984 in a small town near the Brazilian border with Bolivia.
