‌‌ The Islamic Republic announced that it will begin 60% uranium enrichment

The Islamic Republic of Iran has announced that it will begin enriching uranium to 60 percent.

The Islamic Republic informed the International Atomic Energy Agency on Tuesday (April 15th) that Iran would begin enriching 60 percent of uranium, Reuters reported.

The report says that Abbas Araghchi, the head of Iran's negotiating team, while announcing an increase in the percentage of enrichment, said that another 1,000 centrifuges would be set up at the Natanz nuclear facility.

Fars News Agency and Prestavi TV channel reported that Iran's decision had been notified to the International Atomic Energy Agency. "We have seen media reports about this," an IAEA spokesman told Reuters. "We have no comment on that at the moment."

On Sunday, April 26, just one day after the Islamic Republic of Iran announced the launch of new uranium enrichment centrifuges at the Natanz nuclear facility, a problem with the facility's power distribution network caused an "accident."

Iran and the United States held indirect talks last week in Vienna. US officials say they welcome the idea of a direct dialogue with Iran. Reuters writes that one does not expect rapid progress in the Vienna talks, and because Iran has so far refused direct and face-to-face talks with the United States, European diplomats and others act as mediators between Iran and the United States.
