US Pushes Turkey to Replace Iran Oil with Kurdistan’s
The United States has stepped up the pressure on Turkey to end oil and gas purchase from Iran, but filling the gap with crude from the Kurdistan Region, a report claims.
Following the re-imposition of the second phase of US economic sanctions, which mainly targets Iran’s energy sector, Washington is now attempting to limit Iran’s oil exports gradually to zero.
Aydınlık newspaper, a mouthpiece for the Turkish Patriotic Party, reported on Monday that a US delegation recently visited Ankara and persuaded the Turkish officials to end the oil purchases from Iran and abide by the sanctions.
They suggested Ankara to fill the gap in their energy needs with the oil and gas exports from the Kurdistan Region.
The report, without naming its sources, claimed that the move would help the improvement of ties between Erbil and Ankara, as well as a new chapter in Kurdistan Region’s economy.
However, according to the newspaper, Ankara has not yet entirely agreed with the idea, and talks over the issue are ongoing.
