The Iranian regime arrested over 7,000 individuals last year, writes Amnesty on a Thursday report.

The report says that 2018 was a year of shame for Iranian authorities and documented several cases of arbitrary arrests, torture and murder of protesters.

2018 was a year of popular protests against the regime. Among the more than 7,000 detainees are students, protesters, human rights defenders, lawyers, workers, journalists and environmentalists.

The report also highlights the regime's persecution and discrimination of Iran's ethnic and religious minorities.

At least 26 protesters were killed last year, of which nine were in custody of the authorities under suspicious circumstances, according to Amnesty, pointing out that hundreds of others were sentenced to imprisonment or imprisonment.

Several women's rights activists were also arrested for having taken off the veil in protest against the regime's mandatory dress code.

At least 20 journalists and media workers were sentenced to severe prison sentences or punishment after unfair trials, Amnesty reports.

"2018 will go to history as a year of shame for Iran," said Philip Luther, research and policy director for Amnesty's Middle East and North Africa Department.
