The ISIS-affiliated group "Saraya Ansar al-Sunna" claims responsibility for the attack on a mosque in Homs, central Syria.

Damascus, December 26, 2025 (Xinhua) -- The "Saraya Ansar al-Sunna" group, a new ISIS-affiliated armed group in Syria that is hostile to Shiites and Alawites and adheres to Takfiri ideology, claimed responsibility on Friday for the attack on a mosque in the Wadi al-Dahab neighborhood of Homs, central Syria.

In a statement posted on the website "X," the group said, "The mujahideen of Saraya Ansar al-Sunna, in cooperation with mujahideen from another group, detonated a number of explosive devices inside the Ali ibn Abi Talib shrine belonging to the Nusayris, resulting in the death and injury of 40 Nusayris."

The statement denied media reports that the bombing targeted a Sunni mosque, adding that "the group's attacks will continue to increase and will target all infidels and apostates."

Eight people were killed and 18 others wounded on Friday in an explosion at a mosque in the Wadi al-Dahab neighborhood of Homs, central Syria, according to Syrian state media and a human rights monitor.

The official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) quoted Najib al-Naasan, director of referral, ambulance, and emergency services at the Syrian Ministry of Health, as saying, "The death toll from the explosion at the Imam Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque in the Wadi al-Dahab neighborhood of Homs has risen to eight, with 18 wounded, in a preliminary count."

An earlier report had indicated five dead and 21 wounded in the blast.

The agency further quoted a security source as saying, "Initial investigations indicate that the explosion was caused by explosive devices planted inside the mosque."

SANA published photos and a video of the aftermath of the explosion inside the mosque, showing scattered debris, a small hole in a wall, and people apparently conducting an investigation.

Following the explosion, Syrian internal security forces imposed a security cordon and prevented people from approaching the area surrounding the mosque, according to the pro-government Syrian TV.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the deaths of eight members of the Alawite sect and the injury of 27 others, including three children, noting that some of the wounded were in critical condition.

The Observatory stated that the Imam Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque in the predominantly Alawite Wadi al-Dahab neighborhood is frequented by members of this sect, adding that the injured were transferred to hospitals for treatment.

Earlier in the day, the Syrian Observatory reported that the explosion caused panic among residents in the area, noting that "the nature of the explosion and whether it was caused by a suicide attack or explosive devices remains unclear."

The Observatory confirmed that ambulances rushed to the scene, while public security forces fired shots into the air.

In the same context, the Syrian Interior Ministry stated in a press release that the explosion occurred "during Friday prayers," noting that "internal security units were dispatched to the scene and established a security cordon around the mosque, while the relevant authorities began investigating and collecting evidence to pursue the perpetrators of this criminal act."

For its part, the Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned the explosion in the strongest terms in a statement, describing it as a "terrorist crime."

The ministry said, "This cowardly criminal act constitutes a blatant attack on human and moral values, and comes within the context of repeated desperate attempts to undermine security and stability and sow chaos among the Syrian people."

It added, "Syria reiterates its firm stance in combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations," emphasizing that "such crimes will not deter the state from continuing its efforts to consolidate security, protect citizens, and hold those involved in these criminal acts accountable."
