The relationship between Germany and Turkey is no way near improving, and after Germany called on the European Union (EU) to restrict financial aid to Turkey, the European Commission has given the first signal along the same path.

European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources Günther Oettinger stated that he doesn’t believe the EU is going to pay the 4.3 billion Euros of aid planned for Turkey until 2020.

Oettinger pointed out the funds Turkey receives from the EU and said: “These funds were set aside to be used in developing projects bringing Turkey closer to Europe, for instance through training for judges, prosecutors and journalists. Looking at the political developments in Turkey, I cannot fathom how developing such projects could continue.”

Germany had demanded that the European Commission increase economic pressure on Turkey.
