An Iranian satellite fired on Tuesday morning failed to reach the orbit, according to state Iranian television. The planned launch has previously been criticized by the United States.

- The morning's launch of the Paymans satellite was successful. But unfortunately the satellite failed to position itself in the orbit of the last step, said telecommunications minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi.

The satellite was built at Amirkabir Technical University in Tehran and another launch of a satellite built at University Planners. According to Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, the satellite was intended to study climate change in the country.

The satellite launch has been criticized by the United States which believes that the technology of the satellites' launchers is "virtually identical" to that used in nuclear weapons and that launches would therefore violate Resolution 2231 adopted by the UN Security Council in 2015.

According to the resolution, which deals with the terms of the nuclear agreement (JCPOA), Iran must not fire robots capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

US Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo warned Iran on January 3 to implement satellite launches. However, Iran has dismissed the warning and claims that their satellite program is entirely scientific.
