An Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh has been sentenced to another 38 years in prison and 148 punishments, her husband Reza Khandan announced on her Facebook.
Nasrin Sotoudeh was arrested again in June and has been detained in prison since then, which is the case for a rat visa. The Tehran Revolutionary Court later sentenced her, in her absence, to six years' imprisonment for espionage.
Nasrin Sotoudeh has been arrested several times before accused of having represented and defended political prisoners, oppositionists and convicts in the country. One of the regime's courts in Tehran sentenced her to a three-year professional ban in September 2014.
She was awarded the European Parliament's prestigious Sakharov Prize in 2012 for her human rights work in Iran.
"It is grotesque judgment against Soutodeh and we condemn it in the strongest terms and must immediately be abrogated," says Mojtaba Ghotbi in a comment to the rat vision law.
"Sweden should do everything in its power to bring the verdict to an end and Soutodeh is released. She should be taken to a safe country together with her family, ”adds Mojtaba, vice-chairman of the on-law review.
Iran: Free Nasrin Sotoudeh now
Nasrin Sotoudeh, a prominent Iranian human rights lawyer, has been sentenced to 38 years in prison and 148 lashes because of her work defending women's rights & protesting against Iran’s forced hijab laws.
The new sentence of 33 years in prison brings Nasrin’s total sentence - after two grossly unfair trials - to 38 years in prison. Nasrin has dedicated her life to peaceful human rights work, including defending women who peacefully protest against Iran’s degrading forced hijab (veiling) laws.
Women and girls in Iran are not allowed to leave their homes unless they cover their hair with a headscarf and cover up their arms and legs with loose clothing. Nasrin wanted to change this and she was jailed for it.
This is the harshest sentence recorded against a human rights defender in Iran in recent years, suggesting that the authorities are stepping up their repression. These sentences keep Nasrin separated from her husband and two children and stop her from being able to carry out her important work as a human rights lawyer.
Call on the Supreme Leader of Iran to release Nasrin Sotoudeh immediately and unconditionally and for her sentences to be quashed without delay.
