Demirtaş: State institutions responsible for the fire that killed 12 in Adana

Demirtaş: State institutions responsible for the fire that killed 12 in Adana.

From prison, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş sent a message on the fire in Adana’s Aladağ district that claimed the lives of 12 people, 11 of whom were students.

Demirtaş sent the message through his wife Başak Demirtaş, and said the following:
“The fire in Adana’s Aladağ district, where 12 people – 11 of whom were students – died and 22 students got injured, deeply saddened me. I offer my condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those that got injured.
We all yearn for a country where such disasters do not take place. Unfortunately, such disasters will continue to happen if negligence, lack of supervision and responsibility, and the careless stance of state institutions persist.
Children are the future of all of us. Their health, security and peace, where they can receive quality and scientific education without any exploitation, are both our expectation and struggle.
I hope that we will never experience such a disaster and shame. The first step for this to not repeat is to bring those responsible to account. However, this will not be adequate. Our party, democracy forces and all conscious citizens should fulfill their responsibilities in the creation of an environment where children can feel comfortable and develop themselves.”
