Tension is high in in the village of Kerwas in Lice district of Amed where soldiers have carried out an operation in an attempt to demolish a school set to provide education Kurdish in the new school term.

The school has collectively been built by the local people to constitute an alternative to the impositions of the Turkish state on the Kurdish language at schools. The school was set to start public service in Kurdish in the coming days. The village of Kerwas (Yalaza) is inhabited by a large group of people, some 100 families, despite all the efforts made to evacuate it in 90's.

The governor's office was however not late to order the demolition of the school which was built by the people due to the lack of an educational institution in the village.

According to the reports coming through, hundreds of soldiers including special operation teams headed to the village early on Thursday morning, accompanied by a convoy of 30 armored vehicles as well as governorate and land registry cadastre staff.

After soldiers started to move into the village, the local people tried to stop the attempted demolition, standing against them as human shields.

Following half an hour of clashes that erupted as soldiers continued to move, the military retreated to the village of Ortaç (Menyas), also closing the road to the villages of Sisê, Kerwas, Cinêzur and Menyas to traffic, as well as the Amed-Lice road.

Tension remains high in the village and surrounding areas while some 200 people have started vigil near the school to prevent any probable attack or attempt of demolition. Villagers have called on the Kurdish people and elected representatives to support their resistance for the right to mother tongue.

People joining the vigil stress that the demolition order is unlawful, and complain that the demolition goes contrary to the spirit of the ongoing process of resolution for the Kurdish question. They also point out that the removal of the obstacles to the use of the Kurdish language is the only solution of the problem.
