In a stunning engineering project, the Swiss government is using the natural heat trapped in the huge Alpine tunnels to heat homes in mountainous areas.
Deep in these tunnels, the temperature of the rocks and flowing water reaches more than 45 degrees Celsius due to the pressure of the earth's layers, which is a huge and endless source of clean energy.
By installing advanced heat exchange systems and heat pumps, this energy is transferred to district heating networks instead of being wasted and replaces fossil fuels in 80,000 residential units.
According to fact-finding studies, this method not only drastically reduces energy costs for residents of remote villages, but also prevents the emission of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide gas annually.
