Switzerland and Sweden – two countries that are often confused. Sweden is among the 20 countries with the most Swiss expats. Currently, 6,803 Swiss citizens live in Sweden (as of 2024). What makes the country so popular? Perhaps it's these ten fun facts.

1. Informal address is the norm – almost everywhere
In Sweden, it's common to address each other informally, regardless of age or social standing. Whether it's the boss, a police officer, or a professor – addressing each other informally is deeply rooted in Swedish culture and an expression of an egalitarian society. The only exception is the royal family.
2. A paradise for inventors
Sweden is a true innovation hub and is among the countries with the most patents per capita in Europe. Many inventions that shape our everyday lives originated here, including the pacemaker, the Tetra Pak, and even dynamite.

3. The Stockholm Metro as an Art Gallery
The Stockholm Metro is much more than just a means of transport. Almost every station is decorated with works of art such as paintings, sculptures, and mosaics, and is considered one of the world's largest art galleries.
The Stockholm Metro (Swedish: Stockholms tunnelbana, literally "Stockholm's Tunnel") is a rapid transit system in Stockholm. The first line opened in 1950, and today the system comprises 100 operating stations, 47 of which are underground and 53 above ground.

4. Recycling as a Philosophy of Life
Sweden is considered a global pioneer in recycling – not necessarily because everything is recycled perfectly, but because the entire system functions holistically and consistently. Children learn to recycle from an early age, and the country is a leader in waste management: around 99 percent of waste in Sweden is recycled. For example, companies have a responsibility: packaging must be as recyclable as possible.
There is a deposit on bottles and cans, so hardly any valuable materials end up in the residual waste.

5. Parental Leave for All
Sweden is known for its family-friendly policies. Parental leave insurance is generous and allows parents 480 paid parental leave days, which mothers and fathers can share. This promotes a better work-life balance and is commonplace in the country.

6. Alcohol monopoly – the state watches over wine and beer
Anyone who spontaneously wants to buy wine in Sweden will quickly experience the reality of a strong state: The Swedish alcohol monopoly could be a culture shock for tourists from Switzerland. In fact, beverages with an alcohol content above 3.5 percent may only be sold in the state-run "Systembolaget."

7. "Fika" is more than a coffee break
"Fika" may seem like a coffee break – but it is much more: "Fika" means pausing, talking, connecting, and is at the heart of the Swedish philosophy of life.
"Fika" is a key social term for a ritualized break with coffee, pastries, and social interaction.

8. A Land of Forests and Lakes
More than two-thirds of Sweden's land area is forested – around 68 percent. At the same time, there are nearly 100,000 lakes, which gives the country its characteristic abundance of nature.
In one of the largest countries in Europe by area, only 10.6 million people live. For them, nature is more than just a place to visit – it's their habitat. This green forest landscape with blue lakes is in Härjedalen, Jämtland County, Sweden.

9. Multilingualism and Cultural Diversity
In addition to Swedish, five minority languages are officially recognized: Sami, Finnish, Meänkieli, Yiddish, and Romani. This diversity reflects the historical and cultural influences in the country.

10. Beware of confusion
Due to similar names (Sweden/Switzerland), the two countries are often confused worldwide. This has even led Sweden to launch a campaign to humorously highlight the differences.
Conclusion:
Sweden is more of a fascinating experiment than a picture-postcard idyll: a country that organizes closeness, structures freedom, and manages change with a pragmatic approach.
