A new report by the US Department of War Inspector General (Pentagon) shows that rapid military developments in northeastern Syria during the winter of 2026 have significantly changed the balance of power in the region, and the Syrian transitional government has taken control of parts of the areas under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

According to the report, the advance of Syrian government forces in January 2026 has allowed Damascus to regain control of parts of the north and east of the country for the first time in more than a decade, which had been under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces in recent years.

In this regard, the Pentagon says that these developments have occurred simultaneously with the beginning of the gradual integration of forces and institutions affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces into the structure of the central government of Syria.

The United States has also played a mediating role in negotiations between Damascus and these forces to implement security and administrative agreements.

In another part of the report, it is stated that the withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces from some areas has created security gaps around the centers where ISIS members are held.

According to US officials, at least 150 ISIS members escaped from al-Shaddadi prison, raising concerns about the security of prisons and camps affiliated with the group.

The report also addressed the situation at al-Hol camp, saying that the relocation of forces responsible for guarding the camp following developments on the ground has created new security problems. US officials see this situation as a potential threat to regional stability.

According to the report, the US has begun operations to transfer ISIS prisoners from Syria to Iraq to prevent an escalation of the crisis.

The Pentagon Inspector General’s report also points out that Washington has played an active role in mediating between Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces after the Syrian government expanded its control over Kurdistan.

These efforts led to an agreement that began the process of integrating the group’s forces and institutions into the structure of the central Syrian government.

Under the agreement, Syrian government forces entered the cities of Hasakah and Qamishli, and control of some border crossings and administrative institutions was transferred to Damascus. In return, some Kurdish military units were allowed to continue operating in Kurdish-populated areas, and a number of SDF commanders took on responsibilities in local structures.

The report warns that the Syrian government faces command and structural challenges in managing and organizing the newly integrated forces.

بەپێی ڕێککەوتنەکە، هێزەکانی حکومەتی سوریا چوونە ناو شارەکانی حەسەکە و قامیشلۆ و کۆنتڕۆڵی هەندێک دەروازە سنوورییەکان و دامەزراوە ئیدارییەکانیش بۆ دیمەشق گواسترایەوە. لەبەرامبەریشدا ڕێگە بە بەشێک لە یەکە سەربازییە کوردییەکان درا کە لە ناوچە کوردنشینەکان بەردەوام بن لە چالاکییەکانیان و ژمارەیەک لە فەرماندەکانی هێزی ئاسمانی دیموکراتیش لە پێکهاتە ناوخۆییەکان بەرپرسیارێتییان لە ئەستۆ گرت.
