The Israeli network i24NEWS reported on Sunday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed an inter-ministerial team and the head of the country's International Law Division to begin preparing a legal case against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the International Criminal Court (ICC).Netanyahu files a complaint against Erdogan over the Kurds, saying he has destroyed them.
According to the report, the case will focus primarily on allegations regarding Erdoğan's treatment of Kurds in Turkey, while also incorporating the issue of his government's financing of Hamas.
i24NEWS reported that the directive followed Erdoğan's announcement that he had taken steps to secure an Interpol Red Notice against Netanyahu; however, the network noted that this was merely one of a series of tensions that led to the decision to prepare the case.
The network reported that while Israel could pursue the matter at the ICC itself, it is more likely to utilize a third party to file the case.
Neither Israel nor Turkey has signed the Rome Statute, the founding treaty of the International Criminal Court.
Sources cited by i24NEWS stated that Israel hopes it will ultimately not be necessary to actually file the case, intending instead to use its existence as leverage against Erdoğan and as a deterrent.
Netanyahu and Israeli Justice Ministry officials have declined to comment on the report.
