Iranian Kurdish Political Inmate in Critical Health Condition After Hunger Strike


An Iranian Kurdish political inmate who had been on hunger strike for over three months is currently suffering from a critical health condition in the prison.

Mohamad Nazari, a Kurdish political prisoner in Iran, who went on hunger strike for 98 days, was hospitalized on Thursday, a source inside the prison told Hengaw, a human rights agency.

"Nazari was hospitalized in Karaj’s Khomeini hospital after his condition was reported critical,” according to Hengaw.

“He has lost 25kg of his weight,” the source told Hengaw on condition of anonymity.

Nazari, a 46-years-old political activist, was detained in his hometown of Bukan in West Azerbaijan Province on May 30, 1994.

He was sentenced to death by the Iranian regime, but the sentence was later reduced to life imprisonment.

He started a hunger strike to force the judiciary to review his case. Reportedly, he ended the strike on Sunday after his lawyers promised him to support his demand for re-examination of his case.
 
A number of other political prisoners are also on hunger strike, where Nazari is held, the source said.
