According to Shabak, the account of a young Jewish-Canadian woman, "Sarah Poppy" on Facebook, was fake and belonged to the security services of the Islamic Republic.

Sarah Pupi, who has been mainly seeking friendships with Israelis, contacted them on WhatsApp messengers after gaining the trust of her targets, and encouraged her "new friends" to gather information about Israeli officials.

At the same time as promising to pay several thousand dollars, he is assessing their willingness to harm these Israeli officials.

The Facebook account also used "emotional and romantic" methods to persuade its targets, Shabak added in a statement.

According to the statement, Poppy also sought to harm LGBT people, as well as businessmen and diplomats from Arab countries working in Israel.

The Israeli intelligence service says the operators of the account also tried to persuade their Facebook friends to criticize Russian President Vladimir Putin over the Ukraine war in order to destabilize relations between Moscow and Tel Aviv.

Shabak told AFP that he had used the collected data to link the Facebook account to the Islamic Republic's security services.

The Hebrew-language Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper had previously reported that the Israeli spy agency had foiled an Islamic Republic plot to assassinate an Israeli consulate employee in Istanbul.
