The enforced disappearance of Nasrin Sotoudeh is not just another case; it is a horrific sign of the systematic repression of human rights defenders in Iran.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders has stated that she is deeply concerned about the enforced disappearance of Nasrin Sotoudeh. She was arrested on 12 Farvardin 1405 by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence and since then there has been no official and transparent information about her whereabouts. At least one other human rights defender has also been forcibly disappeared.
Mary Lawlor said these are not ordinary cases of detention; they are serious violations of human rights. The authorities of the Islamic Republic must immediately release Nasrin Sotoudeh and all those detained in response to their human rights activities.

Prominent Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh is among the thousands arrested during the war, as Iranian authorities intensify their domestic crackdown.''

Sotoudeh was arrested on April 1 while alone at her home in Tehran. Her family does not know where she is being held and fears for her health and safety as she suffers from heart disease.

Her husband, Reza Khandan, has been imprisoned since December 2024 for advocating for women’s rights.
