Erdogan threatens EU with refugee wave

Turkish President Erdogan threatens to send millions of Syrian refugees to Europe. This is if you do not accept Turkey's right to enter Syria.
- Hello, EU, wake up. I say it again: If you try to describe our operation there as an invasion, you make it easy for us: Then we open the gates and send 3.6 million migrants to you, the Turkish president said in a speech on Thursday in the capital Ankara.
The background is the strong criticism of the outside world against Turkey's military offensive against the Kurdish-controlled northeastern Syria, which began on Wednesday. The latest in condemnation of Turkey's actions are India and Denmark.
"Not honest"
But in his speech, which is primarily aimed at the home opinion, Erdogan defended his efforts in Syria against the international storm of criticism which he believes is hypocrisy.
"They are not honest, they just chatter on," he says of the country's critics, pointing especially to Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
The president claims that the campaign will ensure Syria's territorial integrity by confronting the Kurds in northeastern Syria.
Since the war in Syria broke out in 2011, millions of people have fled the country. 3.6 million of them are in Turkey, which has concluded an agreement with the EU to ensure that, for financial compensation, migrants do not continue on to Europe.
Move refugees
One of Erdogan's objectives in taking over control of northern Syria is to establish a "safe zone" in northern Syria to which up to two million of the refugees can be sent.
According to EU spokesman Maja Kocijancic, the offensive risks exacerbating the already difficult refugee situation and disrupting the fight against the Islamic State terror sector.
"There is no military solution to the conflict in Syria, the only thing that can be sustainable is a political solution," she said.
Trump: Talking to both sides
US President Donald Trump writes on Twitter that the Turks and Kurds have been "fighting for ever" and that the United States has no soldiers or military in the attack area.
Trump writes that he is trying to end the "endless wars" and that he is talking to both sides. “Some want us to send tens of thousands of soldiers to the area and start another war once again. Turkey is a member of NATO. Others say, KEEP OUT OUT, let the Kurds fight in their own wars (even with our financial help). I say hit Turkey very hard financially and with penalties if they do not play by the rules! I keep a close eye on it, ”Trump writes.
