Diplomats: UN investigation into Russian fighters in Libya
Diplomats reported that UN experts are investigating the dispatch of eight Russian-made fighters to Libya, in support of the forces of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
And in case the news is confirmed, the sending plane will be coming from Syria, while it is another indication of increasing involvement of the parties to the Syrian conflict in Libya, according to the British newspaper "Financial Times".
The newspaper believes that sending Russian fighters is an escalating step by the Kremlin to support its ally and commander of forces in eastern Libya.
Diplomats fear that the escalation of Moscow will lead to a direct and potential confrontation between Russia and Turkey, which is providing the military of reconciliation in Tripoli with military and logistical support.
It is reported that the Minister of the Interior of the Tripoli government, Fathi Pashaga, told "Bloomberg" that at least eight Russian fighters from the Soviet era arrived in eastern Libya, which is controlled by Haftar forces, from a Russian air base in Syria, "perhaps to assist in any new air campaign." ".
"The government of national reconciliation received information that at least six MiG-29s and two Sukhoi 24 aircraft landed in the east from the Russian-controlled Hmeimim air base in Syria, accompanied by two Russian-made SU-35s," he added. .
Haftar's forces launched a large-scale offensive to seize Tripoli more than a year ago, but Turkish military intervention reversed the equation, forcing Haftar's forces to withdraw from a strategic air base this week, and to announce a partial withdrawal from the front lines in the capital, Tripoli.
According to Western officials, thousands of Russian and Sudanese mercenaries support Haftar, and the UAE has also supported him by launching drone attacks.
On the other hand, Turkey deployed drones, naval frigates, and thousands of Syrian militia members to defend the capital.
