Turkey to arm Turkmen forces in Iraq’s Kirkuk, after military training.

KIRKUK,— Sunni Turkmen in Kirkuk have formed and stationed a special force of their own in a southern village near the defensive lines of Kurdish Peshmerga forces.

An NRT TV correspondent in Kirkuk, Rokan Jaff, visited the village of Gombtlar – a few hundred meters away from Peshmerga defensive lines – during the night with a hidden camera for security reasons.

The Turkmen force numbers about 400, some of whom are in Turkey to receive military training. The force has been armed with light weapons such as small arms, Kalashnikovs and BKC.

The force is divided into two regiments under the direct supervision of Kirkuk’s Turkmen bloc and is set to be armed by Turkey when they finish training.

Turkmen officials claim the force has been formed to protect the Turkmen populated villages in Kirkuk province. The armed men include residents of Kirkuk’s Turkmen majority sub-district of Yaychi.

According to the head of Yaychi sub-district, Falah Khalil Jalal, the organized force was formed after consultation with Kirkuk Governor Najmadin Karim.

“The force was formed to take care of the area’s [Yaychi] stability to protect Turkmen and residents of the [Yaychi] area,” Jalal told NRT. “The force can be a good alliance for the other security forces. We have discussed the force’s formation with the governor of Kirkuk and he has all the information about it.”

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the dominant party in Kirkuk, has stated a lack of awareness over the force’s formation. The deputy head of the PUK office in Kirkuk, Rawand Mala Mahmoud, expressed concerns the force would lead to tension.

“Turkey arming a force means a preparation for military aggression,” Mahmoud said. “I don’t think the force is being prepared to protect Kirkuk or fight against Daesh [the Islamic State] but is meant to erupt tension in the area.”

The oil rich Kirkuk city in Iraq’s north is claimed by both Iraq’s central government and the country’s Kurdish region.

Kirkuk has a mixed population of Kurds, Turkmens and Arabs. It has been under Kurdish control since June 2014, when Islamic State overran the northwest of the country and Iraqi security forces collapsed.

The Kurds are seeking to integrate Kirkuk province into the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region claiming it to be historically a Kurdish city, but Iraq’s central government, Arabs, Turkmens opposes this.
