If you were in a similar situation, would you allow your daughters to attend these schools?
According to official statistics released by the Taliban-ruled Ministry of Education, as of September 2024, there were more than 21,257 Islamic religious schools (madrasahs) operating across Afghanistan. Of these, about 390 schools are specifically designated for girls, with no age limit for enrollment.
These religious schools include the following:
**19,669 Islamic religious schools (madrasahs)**
**1,207 Quran memorization centers (dar al-hifaaz)**
**115 religious science schools (dar al-uloom)**
39 orphanages
In total, more than 3.6 million students are studying in these centers. Of these, about 95,662 girls are enrolled in religious schools as of August 2023.
This increase in the number of religious schools and the focus on religious education has occurred while secondary and higher education for girls remains closed.
