Iranian, Turkish, Russian Officials to Meet in Geneva for UN Consultations over Syria

UN Syria Envoy Staffan de Mistura said on Wednesday that high-level officials from the three countries of Iran, Russia, and Turkey are expected to meet on June 18-19 in Switzerland's Geneva for consultations with the UN regarding setting up "a constitutional committee" for Syria, said a report on Thursday.

According to Albawaba news agency, the UN official will also invite additional countries for relevant talks, adding that he has been tasked to choose the members of the committee who are going to re-write the Constitution of the Arab country.

The source further said that part of the move is to provide a peaceful environment for new elections as part of a post-war political reform".

Syria has been suffering from a civil war since 2011 which has so far left around 400,000 people dead despite displacing over five million others.
