An Israeli-owned ship, the MV Helios Ray, exploded in its hull in the Oman Sea on the evening of Thursday (February 25th).

According to Reuters, a US Department of Defense official said that the explosion had created holes on both sides of the ship's hull. The cause of the explosion was not immediately identified.

According to the United Nations Shipping Database, the cargo ship is owned by an Israeli company called Ripping, based in Tel Aviv, and registered by a company based in the independent island of Isle of Man. This independent island is located 48 km west of Britain.

The UK Maritime Operations Organization (UKMTO) announced on Friday (February 26th) that "investigations are ongoing and the ship and its crew are safe."

A Pentagon staffer who assisted in compiling the report told Reuters that the ship had been damaged by an explosion above the surface of the water, leaving holes in both sides of the hull.

"The ship's damage consisted of two holes one and a half meters in diameter, but it is not yet clear to us whether these holes were caused by a rocket blast," Israeli Radio Kan reported the ship's owner, Rami Ungar. "It was created or a mine was attached to the hull of the ship."

"The ship's engine was not damaged and the crew was not injured," Rami Ungar told Radio Kahn. "We do not yet know whether the incident was the result of tensions between Iran and the United States, or because he owned an Israeli ship."

This event took place at 20:40 local time on Thursday, February 17th.

The ship was sailing from the port of Dammam in Saudi Arabia on the Persian Gulf to Singapore, according to the Global Maritime Security Company.

The US Navy's Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, said it was aware of the incident and was monitoring the situation.

Tensions in the Persian Gulf have also risen since widespread US sanctions against the Islamic Republic during Donald Trump's presidency.

Washington has blamed the Islamic Republic of Iran for a number of shipwreck attacks in the Persian Gulf, including an May 2019 bombing of four ships, two of which were Saudi oil tankers.

In January 2021, the Islamic Republic Revolutionary Guard Corps seized a South Korean-flagged oil tanker in Persian Gulf waters and called on the Seoul leadership to release Iranian money that had been blocked in South Korean banks due to US sanctions.

In 2018, more than 21 million barrels of oil per day were exported through the Strait of Hormuz, which is equal to 21% of global crude oil demand.

The Israel and Isle of Man-affiliated vessel had last called at Dammam, Saudi Arabia and was underway to Singapore having sailed via the the Tunb-Farur and Strait of Hormuz TSS during daylight hours. Crew reported to be safe despite damage.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Bani Gantz raised the possibility that he was behind the attack on the country's cargo ship in the Iranian Oman Sea, which the Kayhan newspaper reported in a report said that the attack was carried out by the "Axis of Resistance". The ship, named Umayyad Helios Ray, was flying the Bahamas in the Oman Sea at the time of the incident on Thursday evening. "The proximity between the scene and Iran raises concerns that the country is responsible for the attack," Bani Gantz told an Israeli media outlet (kan news). He also stressed that a full research has not been done yet. We must continue our research. The Iranians are seeking to damage Israel and the country's infrastructure. The UK-based maritime security company Driad Global said the ship, owned by Helios Ray Co., was a carrier and was heading to Singapore from the Saudi port of Dammam at the time of the accident. Syria and Iraq, along with the rapid advance of the Yemeni revolutionaries in Marb and these days, the attack on the Zionist regime's warship, which was sailing under the cargo ship and with the flag of another country, show that they say that the era of the past is accurate. . » The newspaper also claimed that the vessel was an "Israeli warship" belonging to Israel and "probably wanted to spy on the Persian Gulf." The damaged ship anchored in the port of Dubai The Associated Press also reported today that the Israeli-owned cargo ship anchored in the UAE port of Dubai for repairs. According to the report, it is not yet clear what caused the explosion, but it came as tensions between the United States and Iran over the 2015 nuclear deal escalated. "It has never been a secret that the Iranians are trying to harm Israeli targets," Gilad Ardan, Israel's ambassador to the United States and its representative to the United Nations, told Israeli army radio on Sunday. He claimed that the explosion on the Israeli ship was similar to previous Iranian attacks. Iranian officials have not yet commented on the incident, but Tehran has blamed Israel for several attacks inside Iran in recent months, including an explosion at the Natanz nuclear facility last summer and the assassination of scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.
