Iran’s gas sector has suffered damage; by official admission, there is a strong likelihood that gas supplies for the general public will be cut off. It goes without saying, however, that these cuts would apply only to the Iranian people—not to the Lebanese, Palestinians, Yemenis, or the Hashd al-Shaabi forces present in Iran. The Iranian government has never cared about the Iranian people, nor does it now, because the majority of high-ranking Iranian officials are Arab.
Has Iran’s gas sector reached a breaking point? 🔥⛽️
Iran hasn't run out of gas, but the gap between production and consumption can no longer be ignored.
Last year, the gas supply-demand imbalance reached approximately 250 to 300 million cubic meters per day at times. This crisis persists this year, with damage to the Assaluyeh gas facilities placing further strain on production.
According to government officials, about 230 million cubic meters of daily production capacity was taken offline following attacks on energy infrastructure; the Ministry of Petroleum has announced that roughly 95 million cubic meters of this capacity will be restored to the grid by the end of the month of Shahrivar (late September).
However, the root of the crisis goes beyond facility damage. High consumption, low energy prices, rising domestic and industrial demand, and a lack of investment in the development and maintenance of gas fields have exacerbated Iran’s long-standing imbalance.
The South Pars field—which supplies about 68% of the country's gas—is facing concerns regar
ding a drop in reservoir pressure; without the implementation of pressure-boosting projects, there is a risk of declining production in the coming years.
The stakes go beyond gas exports; over 73% of the country's energy mix relies on gas, and more than 80% of the fuel for thermal power plants comes from gas. Consequently, any shortfall could impact electricity supplies, the industrial sector, and the daily lives of the people.
In your opinion, should the priority for resolving Iran's gas crisis be increasing production, or reforming consumption patterns and boosting investment?
