A senior US official told Al-Arabiya on Thursday evening that US President Joe Biden had emphasized that he would not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.

The US official, who did not want to be named, accused Iran in an online news conference of not doing enough to reach an agreement in the nuclear talks. "We can reach an agreement before the upcoming elections in Iran, but it depends on Tehran," he added.

Asked by Al-Arabiya about the differences in the Vienna talks between Tehran and Washington, the senior official explained: "So far, no agreement has been reached with Iran on anything in the Vienna talks. "Iran's demands in Vienna were unrealistic."

Regarding the possibility of lifting sanctions in return for Iran's return to its obligations, he said: "It remains to be seen whether a joint return to the UN Security Council will be possible in the coming weeks and whether there will be any understanding on mutual commitment. The answer is yes, it is possible. Is this predictable? The answer is that time determines everything.

"As I said, the issue ultimately depends on a political decision that Iran must make."

Earlier, informed media sources revealed on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, that the Vienna nuclear talks had been hampered by widespread disagreements between Tehran and Washington over measures to limit Iran's nuclear activities.

"The United States and Iran have serious differences over measures to restrict Iran's nuclear activities," the Axis website quoted its sources as saying.

According to these reports, the main difference in the Vienna talks is the advanced centrifuges that enable faster uranium enrichment.
