Senior Israeli officials have confirmed the Islamic Republic's targeting of the tanker, prompting a backlash.

Israel blames the Iranian government for the attack on the ship and is seeking a tough response.

On the evening of July 30, Israel accused the Iranian government of attacking an oil tanker controlled by the Israeli company Zodiac off the coast of Oman, and said that a firm and decisive response was needed.

"We must react strongly to the attack that killed two Romanian and British crew members," Israeli Foreign Minister Yaer Lapid said in a statement.

"The world must not remain silent in the face of the Iranian regime's terrorism, which also harms the freedom of shipping," Lapid said in the statement.

The Japanese-owned merchant ship Mercer Street, operated by the Israeli shipping company Zodiac, was attacked by a drone on Thursday night as it was flying from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Fajr in the United Arab Emirates, killing a Romanian captain. The ship and a British security force were killed. The attack was attributed to the Iranian regime.
