G7: Iran "threatens international peace
The G7 countries jointly condemned last week's attack on an oil tanker in the Arabian Sea on Friday, saying that evidence suggests that Iran was behind the incident.
Two crew members were killed when an oil tanker from an Israeli-owned shipping company was attacked outside Oman.
According to the company, the ship was on its way from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. It must not have had any cargo on board. The two crew members killed were from Romania and the United Kingdom.
"We condemn the illegal attack on a merchant ship," the foreign ministers of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States said in a joint statement.
"This was a deliberate and targeted attack and a clear violation of international law," they added. "All available evidence clearly points to Iran. There is no justification for this attack. ”
The ship is managed by a company owned by an Israeli billionaire, and Israel - along with the United States and Britain - had already pointed the finger at Tehran. Iran has denied involvement.
In its statement, the G-7 countries said "Iran's behavior, together with its support for proxy forces and non-state armed actors, threatens international peace and security."
"We call on Iran to stop all activities that are incompatible with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and call on all parties to play a constructive role in promoting regional stability and peace," they said.
