A former official reveals the scenes of the last moments of Ghani's rule and the details of his escape from Afghanistan

An advisor to former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani revealed the scenes of the last moments of Ghani's rule and the details of his escape from Afghanistan to the UAE, with the arrival of the Taliban movement in the capital, Kabul.

The source told CNN that Ghani and his advisers were astonished by the speed of the Taliban's advance in Kabul, noting that Ghani "was not ready for the Taliban to reach the outskirts of Kabul last Saturday, and he fled Sunday with only the clothes he was wearing."

He noted that "a senior member of Ghani's administration met in Kabul with a prominent member of a group allied with both the Taliban and al-Qaeda, who frankly told him that the government should surrender."

He stressed that "in the days prior to the arrival of the Taliban in Kabul, we were working on an agreement with the United States to peacefully hand over power to an inclusive government and the resignation of President Ghani," noting that these talks were underway when the Taliban entered the city.

The former official continued, "Our intelligence interpreted the Taliban's entry into Kabul from several points as a hostile advance, noting that they had received intelligence information for more than a year that the president would be killed if the Taliban took control."
