Responding to calls by Sheikh “Ghazal Ghazal,” the supreme spiritual authority of the Alawite community, tens of residents have participated in peaceful demonstrations in different areas in Syria’s coastal region. This coincided with strict security measures to prevent people of the Alawite community to participate in the protests, along with establishment of checkpoints and rigorous inspection by government forces.

In this context, tens of residents staged a peaceful protest in Al-Azhari roundabout in Latakia city under the slogan “we want federation,” and they lifted placards with slogans written on them confirming the demands which Sheikh Ghazal emphasized during yesterday’s statement.

The protestors affirmed their adherence to their rights to obtain dignity and political and civil rights, stressing the peaceful nature of the demonstrations and rejection of all forms of violence.

In Bniyas, however, residents have endured repression by governmental forces, amid heavy deployment at the water institution and the entrances of Al-Qosour neighbourhood paralyzing civilian movements.

Moreover, pro-government individuals headed to Al-Zeraa roundabout in Latakia under security protection, where those practices came as attempts to prevent residents form participating in the demonstrations.

Despite the heavy security deployment, the protestors expressed their insistence on continuing their peaceful protests, stressing their right to express their opinion and rejecting to bow to pressure practiced to restrain public protests.
