If Europe and Turkey want to send Syrian refugees home, pretending Syria is stable achieves the opposite. You cannot solve a problem by denying it exists.

The core issue is not optics or messaging. It is radical militant Islamism.

And the most credible path forward is not betting on the least extreme version of extremists. It is supporting Western-aligned ethnic and religious minorities in the region. Kurds. Yazidis. Druze. Others like them who have consistently resisted jihadist rule and paid the price for it.

Being “practical” has too often meant lowering expectations and hoping for the best. That approach has failed repeatedly. It is time to stop recycling the same illusion and start backing the forces that actually stand in opposition to extremism.
