Syrian Democratic forces lost over 11,000 lives defeating ISIS alongside the US coalition. But they also built inclusive governance that helped protect minorities and strengthen social cohesion. As areas were liberated from ISIS, local communities were empowered to govern deliberately, including religious and ethnic minorities. With half the leaders being women.
