France and Cyprus have signed a military agreement that will expand defense cooperation between the two countries and give French forces access to some military facilities on the island.

Turkey has criticized the agreement, calling it a violation of the 1960 Cyprus treaties and warning of what it called “serious consequences.” The agreement further strengthens France’s military presence in the eastern Mediterranean, a region that has seen growing geopolitical competition in recent years.

Turkey, Greece, Cyprus and France have had several disputes in recent years over maritime borders, energy resources and military presence in the eastern Mediterranean.

Paris is a key backer of the Cypriot and Greek governments in the disputes, while Ankara has repeatedly objected to the increased foreign military presence on the disputed island.

Cyprus has been divided into Turkish and Greek parts since 1974.
